Interview Process

I recently had a Zoom system design interview with AMD, which turned out to be much more relaxed than I expected. The interviewer presented a system design question about collecting GPU performance data. Throughout the process, I shared my thoughts while answering his questions, such as “How would you handle scaling?” and “What would you do if a part of the system fails?” He didn’t expect me to propose a completely perfect architecture but was more interested in how I think and make trade-offs regarding technical solutions. We discussed technologies like Kafka, Flink, and Time-series databases, and he was less concerned about which specific technology to choose and more focused on the reasoning behind my choices. There was no coding involved, nor were there any brain teasers; the entire interview felt more like a technical discussion. At the end, he asked a few behavioral questions and allowed me to inquire about the team dynamics. Overall, it felt more like a technical exchange rather than an interrogation.

Tips & Insights

Approach the interview as a discussion. Focus on your thought process and the reasoning behind your technical choices, rather than striving for a perfect answer.
